Proposal

  1. The program that I am enrolled in is Social Sciences.
  2. A.  As a child growing up until now, I never really understood the concept of success and where the scale measures “success” vs “unsuccess”. The anecdote I can use in my essay would be that when Ii was around the age of 10 I wanted this pair of shoes called “yeezys” designed by Kanye West. At the time, the shoes were valued at 700$ but I also didn’t know that the monetary value of these shoes was ridiculous for a 10 year old to own let alone let his parents pay for it for him. As I grew older, I was so fixated on getting my pair that I started buying/selling and at the age of 15 I finally got my first pay that I paid with my own money. I had reached my goal but did I attain “success” or was I still on the way there?

B. What are the different misconceptions do people have defining success and how has social media and other external factors affected Generation Z’s view of defining success.

C. Social Media has changed the view of what it is to achieve and ways to do so.

  1. Since I am part of this generation and constantly addicted to my phone, having trouble with what I want to do vs what social media entices me to do are colliding with one another and puts me in a difficult situation that I’m sure I am not alone in. What interests me is that I don’t have the answer to the question but I want to find out.

With the help of all the research and essay writing that I will be conducting later this semester, I hope that this paper has a chance to give me more of an insight to what I should be focusing on and help me get one step closer to what I want to achieve.

  1.

Although I haven’t had the chance to start doing research, I believe that the “bigger picture” is that each person should have their own version of success and achievement. Another “bigger picture” is that people mix up “success” with “wealthiness” and cannot disassociate both those terms together. When thinking/writing about this topic it is disturbing because I find it hard sometimes to disassociate the two terms because the second I open my phone it is all that I see.

  1. I think that my feature story will come close to being an investigation due to the amount of research that will be done to find out why we view things in this way (relating back to topic).
  2. I will be writing this feature story for everyone who is on social media and is impressed by what they see and have the notion that “this is how I will make it” or for those who are confused on the idea on success vs being rich. My intended audience would be people from the ages of 15-20 years old.
  3. The aim of my feature story is to allow the reader to rethink their goals and how they view success. Having the ability to rethink and allow them to assess their lives goals and ask themselves “what do I want to do with my life” if they haven’t answered that question already themselves.
  4. I have not had the chance to do research
  5. My feature story will try to evaluate all of the external factors that allows teens of Generation Z have the misconception of what it is to be successful vs what it is to be rich. The success comes from within yourself and not with the numbers in your bank account. If I were to be rich but not feeling like I am satisfied with what I have done in my life have I succeeded? Instagram is one of the main social media platforms that I will be focusing on. The life that influencers/celebrities portray is familiarized nowadays to be “the life” that everyone wants to attain and live. What instagram users don’t know is that this is a fake life and is unattainable.
