Brainstorm

Sitting down in my chair, scrolling through my Instagram feed with constant posts of all these rappers with their money, wondering to myself why I am studying calculus instead of making music to become successful. As a society, we are all addicted to our cellular devices, ranging from the ages of 15-60 years old, mobile devices have a key role in our everyday lives. Downloading applications such as Instagram,Snapchat,Facebook and other social media applications, we are interconnected with millions of people all around the world. These social media platforms allow anyone to share media and update each other with our whereabouts, what clothes we are wearing, who we are with etc. Instagram allows us to share pictures with our “followers”, meaning that if we want to know what someone is doing we would “follow” them to give us updates on their life. The idea of following turns society into sheeps on their devices that always want to know what others are doing and comparing your life with the life of someone else. The feeling of jealousy and being envious of others’ success consumes people to spread hate, lies and find reasons to dislike that person due to his/her achievements. A social media platform called Soundcloud allows up and coming artists to post their music with the aspirations for one day to be recognized and being signed by a label to become an official artist. As being born in generation Z, the misconception of this life that many people are trying to aspire to is unrealistic and unattainable. Most of these artists only want it for fame and money but will that make them successful in life? Personally, I have aspirations in life but unsure of how I will attain them. By being raised in this generation, we are brainwashed by the media on all electronic devices to show us how we want to be wealthy enough to live a comfortable lifestyle in the near future. Society depicts that the steps to take in order to achieve this is to go to school, get a degree, work for many years and live the rest of our lives profiting on the earnings that we have made. As a student, we are envious of these artists because they are attaining this with their musical talent at a young age without going to school, writing exams and wasting a lot of their life in a room between books. Following school and working, how can I measure how “successful” I will become, will it be measured by the amount of money I have in the bank+my assets, or the goals I set out for myself that I completed. Personally, I believe that success comes from within and not from what society tells us to achieve with all of the materialistic items that are not worth the cost.
